For those of you who don’t know, I’ve been working on a project in Detroit (periodically).
It is a place that has been going through a great change for a number of years, and I am excited to see where it is going. I started shooting there in March 2010 when I made my first trip out there to visit a (now, ex) boyfriend.
I strive to shoot only in Detroit specifically; there are tons of suburbs surrounding the inner city and I do not consider that part of Detroit proper. Detroit was once a great city of industry in this country and now it is a model for what happens when cities fail and need to be rebuilt. Lots of talks have been on-going in regards to the decreasing population and how to handle it. Some think the city should just be burnt down and start over; others feel Detroit needs to be downsized geographically and condensed in order to feel like a real, true city again.

I met Mike through his roommate, Alex, who I started talking to at a jazz club/bar downtown called Clif Bell’s. I’ve managed to keep in touch with Mike and Alex for about two years and hope to go back to shoot soon. It’s been difficult to sync up my schedule with theirs, as well as find the funds to make another trip back, but I plan on going very, very soon to shoot more and understand what’s happening with the future of Detroit and the people who are going to shape it.

a swift kick in the ass.
I’ve been doing a lot of traveling lately for work - San Francisco, Miami, New York, L.A. - so unfortunately the posts haven’t really been made, and I need to get back on doing that.
Additionally, I’ve had some incredible encounters with photo directors, creative directors, assistants and other photographers, and it’s been ass-kicking and eye-opening.
I’ve been working on a portrait project, but fell off it for a period due to just working too much and personal life garbage. My life has been in pretty much perfect order, and everything seems so much clearer. I realize, now, that I cannot let work (or anything, or anyone) get in the way of my career. I am determined, energized, and motivated.
This is my year.

this is the first time i had seen my father in two years, and the first time i spent his birthday with him in ten. i specifically bought a 5D mark II and an olympus LS-7 pcm field recorder to document this trip. best investments i’ve made in a long, long time.
